The Region 4 Planning and Development Council and several partners have received a $1.5 million grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to build 27 miles of mountain biking trails, completing the Monday Lick Trail System near Marlinton, West Virginia. This project will help the Snowshoe Highlands Ride Center, the state’s only International Mountain Bicycling Association Ride Center, work toward a gold-level designation, which is expected to boost tourism and bring significant economic benefits to nearby counties by attracting more mountain bikers and supporting local jobs. The funding is part of a larger $47 million federal initiative supporting economic diversification in Appalachian communities affected by coal industry declines, with additional support from local organizations and foundations.
